    Title:I Got a "D" in Salami
    Author:Henry Winkler

I think the author wrote this book to have fun.
    My short summary
In this book, Hank Zipzer gets a "D" in math on his report card. He takes the report card and grinds it up in salami (his mom is the owner of a deli). That salami is getting delivered to a person who owns a supermarket. Hank tries to stop the delivery, by going to the supermarket owner's apartment with his dog. Hank's dog and the supermarket owner's dog start spinning all over, knocking over the tray of salami and it goes flying everywhere. Hank picked up a piece of salami and there was a big D. Hank had stopped it after all.

  5. THE INVENTION OF HUGO CABRET by David Selznick is a popular book at the AIS library, and it is scheduled to be made into a feature film. The story takes place in Paris during the 1930s, where a 12-year old boy named Hugo, a bookish girl his age, a broken mechanical man, and a mean old shop owner all carry secrets that bring them together.
The story is written and told through pictures. Someone who enjoys graphic novels would especially like this book, but even though this book is 525 pages, it is a fast read.

  7. Title: The New Policeman
    Author: Kate Thompson
Why did you like this book: I liked the plot because it was mysterious and interesting. On the beginning the book was boring, though.
Who would like this book: I think that this book could be compared to Artemis Fowl. In both books, there are fairies and two different worlds. So I think that people that liked Artemis Fowl might like this book.

  8. Title: Before Midnight A Retelling of "Cinderella"
    Author: Cameron Dokey
Why did you like this book: Well I'm really not a person who likes to read-books usually can't keep my attention. But sometimes there are books that I don't want to stop reading and I think this was one of those. I really liked the way the book was written (in a way that I can't quite explain why)
Who would like this book? First of all people who like happy endings will like it, and perhaps also people who like magic would like it(but that's not me)

  9. Sunrise Over Fullujah
    By Walter Dean Myers
    Reviewed: Paul. Wharshavsky

Sunrise Over Fullujah, by Walter Dean Myers, is a very interesting book. The story is about a Robin a boy from Harlem. After finishing college he joins the United States army.
He was sent by the army to the border of Iraq. Jonesy, Robin’s best friend, and Robin himself, agree to protect each other. Jonesy entertains Robin by constantly talking about music and nightclubs. His other friend Marla keeps teasing Robin and calling him “Birdy”. While serving the army in Iraq, Robin has many crazy experiences. For example, he learns techniques to save people’s lives and how to shoot many types of guns.
In this book, there are many scary events, like when his comrades got kidnapped. He never sees them again. Another scary situation was when his friend picked up the phone and the phone was actually a bomb, causing his friend to die. There was also a part in the story when he is in the ambulance and a terrorist tried to kill him.
On the other hand, he also saved people lives. He once had to save his commander in the hospital while she was dying.
In this story Robin realizes that he cannot trust anyone and can’t ever relax. He also realizes that the army gave him opportunities he never imagined he would have in the U.S.
In my opinion this book was good because Myers explains the story very well and he describes the setting, and the life threatening situations very well. I think Sunrise is a book on the level of someone 9 to13 years old, but I still liked it. I give it 8 out of 10, because the story was original because its based on a real story but he changed the story and made it better ,but the action was more at the end of the book.

  10. Before Midnight, the Retelling of Cinderella by. Cameron Dokey

When I had to choose a book to read among all the other new books, without given plenty of time to make my choice, I took somebody’s suggestion and picked up the book, checked it out, and in two days the book was finished.
As Cendrillon’s father wishes not to see his own daughter who took away his wife’s life ever again, Cendrillon starts her life in the big stone castle with Raoul, the baby boy who was brought in Etienne’s arms two weeks after Cendrillon was born.

On their 15th birthday, Cendrillon and Raoul make their wishes, same as usual, Cendrillon for something (whatever the something is) that is planted in her mother’s grave to be alive and Raoul to know who he is and where he comes from. For nearly 15 years their wishes never came true; until Cendrillon’s new stepmother Chantal and stepsisters Anastasia and Amelie and Prince Pascal plays a role in the story.
Some other main characters, such as Old Mathilde and Niccolo, also give help in different ways.

When I first saw the cover of the book, I got a feeling that it wouldn’t be a modern book talking about something that could happen in real life, and I was I was correct. Neither was it normal, nor was it a modern book I think of. Even though it was a retelling of an already-existing-well-known fairy tale, it had a totally different impression.

Told in a 1st person point of view by Cendrillon, this book quite awed me along with teaching me lessons by the way the characters acted and helped each other, encouraged each other, and giving love to each other.

I definitely recommend this book to those who want to explore a new style of Cinderella, but not to those who strongly disagree with magical events. Besides, who knows if there will be a miracle taking place here, for instance there being another great book I would like to read, perhaps?

  11. The Magician
    Tyler Harden
Everyone likes to believe in magic and mythology. Michel Scott’s novel, The Magician, provides a glimpse into a world were magic and mythologies are interwoven. The Magician details the trials of a twin brother and sister as they traverse through Paris in their attempt to reclaim Nicolas Flamel’s stolen book of Abraham the Magi. The magical book holds the key to eternal life as well as the key to humanity’s destruction. The twins, Josh and Sophie, must battle many exotic mythical creatures in an attempt to save the world by finding the stolen tomb.

The Magician is very similar to the Percy Jackson series, stories of secret magic and mythology. In these tales, “realization occurs” when someone reveals the truth to the teenage protagonist – magic exists.

I chose this novel, because I had enjoyed a prior book in the series. I highly enjoyed the author’s frequent use of mythical creatures, including those lesser known such as a windango, a beast from ancient Native American lore or the valkerie, the ancient Nordic warrior women. However, for the 8th grade reader the book seemed predictable, and unimaginative at times, the characters were underdeveloped, and unfeeling. I also found the plot too outrageous, the characters often escape death throughout the novel for no apparent reason other then dumb luck. However, I would recommend The Magician to younger readers, between the ages of ten to twelve.

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau Banks
    Israel

The Disreputable History of Frankie Landau-Banks, by E.Lockhart, begins its story with a letter addressed to the administration of Alabaster Preparatory Academy, the boarding school which Frances Rose Landau Banks- Frankie for short- is currently attending. In it she takes “full responsibility for the disruptions caused by the Loyal Order of the Basset Hounds.” All I thought to myself when I was reading this was, ‘Who are these Hounds?’ and ‘Why in the world is this Frankie person taking credit for something called The Canned Beet Rebellion? And why would she abduct a guppy?’ As I started to read the book, I found out that Alabaster used to be an all-male prep school, and that even after it became co-educational, there was still a secret society there that was all male, called the Loyal Order of the Basset Hounds. And, Frankie happens to be dating their leader, Matthew Livingston. She is happy with the relationship until she finds out about the Bassets and Matthew’s position in their society. After the other leader of the Bassets, known as Alpha, leaves on vacation, she impersonates him and gives orders to the other Basset Hounds for a series of pranks (yes, The Canned Beet Rebellion and the Guppy abduction were pranks). Frankie grows up at school, but, she grows up at home, too, showing her family that she is no longer their “Bunny.” The Disreputable History is full of twists and turns, imagined neglected positives (i.e. gruntled, from disgruntled), and strong feminism. As Frankie struggles with conflicts with society’s values, she goes on her own quest of self realization. So does our heroine Frankie pull through in the end? 352 pages long, it’s probably too long for girls under 12, but it is too wordy for most girls under 15, unless they have mature literary tastes. I didn’t want it to end, and I hoped for more of Frankie’s outrageous pranks. It is definite must read for any girl with an adventurous streak.

    Summary:
The New Policeman was written by Kate Thompson. The book's main characters are J.J., Aengus, and Father Dorothy.
The plot of the book is about finding time. The main character, J.J. decides to find more time after his mother's birthday wish is to have more time. So while delivering his mother's cheese, he starts an interesting conversation with Anne Korff who shows him where the time is running out. That is, to another world to which he can get through a souterrain (an underground chamber or series of chambers, commonly found in ancient Irish ring forts). People in J.J.’s world who know about it refer to it as the "fairy world" because they believe that fairies live there. According to fairies, they think that their name does not exactly suit them, but they don't mind it. Furthermore, fairies have a name for the people in the normal world as well (Ploddies). So J.J. discovers that in the fairy world fairies play music all the time. They claim to be the authors of all the music that the ploddy people know. The ploddy just heard the fairy people play the music and not realizing it, they think that they made it up. The fairy world used to be timeless. No one ever got old, no one ever died, there was no "always" or "ever”. But suddenly there was a time leak. Though fairies insist that it started about 50-100 years ago, in J.J.'s time it started getting worse than ever. J.J. discovers that to find more time he has to stop the leak. While in the fairy world, he meets a fairy names Aengus. Aengus is a fiddle player. Undercover he was pretends to be a new policeman in the ploddy world to find out more about the leak. Aengus and J.J. became friends. To find the leak, they travel to Aengus's father, Dagda. He believes that he is a god because he can do magic. Dagda tells them that he can feel the "filthy time" coming in from somewhere near them. Again, Aengus and J.J. search for the leak. While they search, Bran, a dog with them, trails away and J.J. goes to find her. He finds her in a souterrain, actually. She has met Father Dorothy. As mentioned before, the Liddy family were great musicians. The church, however, opposed to the music they played. But J.J.'s great grandfather wouldn't stop playing his flute no matter what. One day, Father Dorothy was so furious he crashed a music party at the Liddys’ and took J.J.’s great-grandfather’s flute away. No one followed him, so no one knew where the flute was. When J.J. saw Father Dorothy in the souterrain, he immediately knew that the flute must be there too. It came to him, then, that if Father Dorothy had the flute stuck in the fluid wall between the two worlds, it would easily make a leak. The fluid surrounds the flute, but because the flute has holes and since the fluid wall only goes around objects to let them though, the flute makes a perfect leak. J.J. decides not to take the flute with force, but cleverly talkes Father Dorothy into leaving the fairy world. Just as Father Dorothy goes trough the fluid wall, J.J. grabs the flute. J.J. plays music with Aengus for a while, but then returns to the ploddy world and "lives happily ever after".

    My opinion:
I liked the plot of the book. It was very interesting and mysterious. The beginning was kind of boring, though and it was hard to get thorough it. The book got a lot better once J.J. entered the fairy world. I don't really have a favorite part because I don't think that there were important moments in this book (except for maybe when J.J. grabbed the flute from Father Dorothy). I think that the incidents in this book have to be connected in order to form a good plot.
I would recommend this book to anyone. In a way, I think it's similar to Artemis Fowl so people that liked Artemis Fowl might like this book. By similar I mean fairies and worlds. In Artemis Fowl, you can also say there are two different worlds, but there is not an actual barrier between them. Still, there are fairies and magic and time [in first Artemis Fowl book, the fairies stopped time for awhile].
I chose this book for this project because of the cover, mostly. I like the cover because the inside of a clock makes it very mysterious and I think I like mysterious books. Also on the cover page, there's a comment from Eoin Colfer which gives a positive opinion about it (=D).

The book AK is simply an interesting story that’s worth reading at least once. The setting of this book takes place in a region called Nagala in Western Africa in the present day. The book is about the conflicts inside Africa. The conflicts shown in the book are pretty realistic. The main character is a boy named “Paul”. He was born in Nagala, and by the time Paul was a young child, Nagala was dealing with great difficulties. When Paul was 9 years old, a unknown army rushed into Paul’s village and wiped it out. After he lost everyone and everything around him, he joined a commando unit called NLA (Nagala Liberation Army). Michael Kagomi, the leader of the commando unit, takes cares of Paul during the war. When the war was finished, he became Paul’s father. When the war finished, Paul buried his AK-47, hoping never to use it again. Things looked peaceful. Everything seemed to be going well, for the moment. But about a year later, there was another coup d’état in Nagala. Michael got kidnapped by the rebel force. Now Paul goes to save his father from the enemy. Once again, he raised his AK.
This book is similar to the movie “Blood Diamond”, even though the reason they fight is different. In the movie “Blood Diamond”, they fight for financial benefits. In “AK”, they fight for survival. Although both of them show the issues and the facts of present day Africa. The book shows the lives of child soldiers. This book AK will be best fit to the readers who like adventures, especially with tough action. I chose to read this book because I love military stories based on historical facts. The best part of the book for me was when another coup d’état occurred and Paul went to dig up his AK and when he finally gets it.

Fat Kid Rules the World --- Summary

Being a 300-pound, seventeen-year-old who goes to public school isn’t easy for Troy. In the beginning of the book, Troy attempts suicide when curt, a legendary dropout from his school stops him. Curt, a homeless 18 year old, saves him from death and claims that he saved Troy’s life. Curt is Troy’s first real friend. After a couple of days of getting to know each other, Curt asks Troy to join his band (which will only consist of the two of them) and promises Troy that there will be gigs and that they will become huge. Troy’s father isn’t very supportive about Curt and Troy being friends. He warns Troy that Curt is no good, Troy couldn’t resist. Troy’s position was playing the drums while Curt plays the guitar. Their first few gigs were failures, but still, Curt was going to keep to his promise.
Curt and Troy were about to play their biggest gig yet. Troy was ready, he was good, and felt much better with himself. Unfortunately, Curt ended up in the hospital; he was addicted to prescription drugs. In the end, with a lot of thought, Troy decides to report this to his father. His father and he both decide that Curt should stay with them until he recovers. Otherwise, they would report him to the authorities. Curt doesn’t know what to do he doesn’t want anyone to help him. They both go to the gig after all. Troy convinces his dad to sneak Curt out of the hospital. For the first time in his life, Troy finds the courage to play in public. They both taught each other important lessons in life.
This book has a movie version, that’s its tie-in. The best part of this book was the ending when Troy and Curt play their gig, the climax. I chose this book to read, actually, because of its title, it caught my attention. Also, I heard that this book was good from other students. Lastly, I would recommend the book (and probably the movie) to anyone between the ages of 13 and 18. This book included many swear words that young readers shouldn’t be exposed to. I don’t think that girls would appreciate this book as much as guys would (mostly because the main characters are teenage guys).

Safe, by Susan Shaw, is a tragic story about a rape victim. The victim’s name is Tracy. As she is walking home on an ordinary day, she exchanges goodbye with her best friend as always, and starts the 6 houses down walk home. As she reaches half way between her house and Caroline’s (her best friend) an old rusty orange car speeds up and nearly hits her as it slams into the curb. A young man gets out of the car, his name is Burgess Newman. She recognized him but paid no attention to this. The only time when she realized something was wrong was when he violently yanked her off the sidewalk and shoved her into the trunk of the old car. What happened after that was the feeling of safe being ripped away from her, after 2 years of trying to get it back.
The setting of the book is based in the present summer time in Pennsylvania. There are many conflicts in the book, but the main ones will be between Tracy and Burgess. It is an external conflict, but an internal also. Another main conflict is between the friendship of Tracy and Caroline. After the raping, Tracy isolates herself from everyone and everything except for Papa. She feels dirty and scarred; she thinks that no one really likes her anymore. Only just feels sorry for her. There are many real life situations that can relate to this book. A TV program called Law and Order: Special Victims Unit, shows in one episode what happened to a young girl who had gotten raped. How she reacted, and how she cut off completely from everyone. Once she got back to safety, she told no one of the rape. All she did was take her clothing and tried to wash off the entire situation. Like if she washed her clothing clean, the memory would go away. That’s how Tracy felt.
I chose this book to read because the title had caught my eye. I thought safe was an interesting title and I always tend to read books with interesting titles. Once I read the summary, I started to ask myself questions on what actually happens to a rape victim after the rape. Does the victim merely disappear? Or do they just end up like a missing sock that was lost in the laundry? So those kinds of questions made me chose to read this book.
One of the best parts of the book was when Tracy finally gets the courage to leave her house and go to the place her and Caroline call “Monkey Rock”, which is an outdoor picnic park in the woods near her house. Her and Caroline bike up to Monkey Rock and have fun like they used to, because ever since the rape, she cut off from her and didn’t think Caroline actually still liked her as a friend anymore, but after they at their sandwiches and were walking their bikes down the hill to the highway, Tracy slips the thing that she had been keeping to herself to Caroline. You’ll have to read to find out what she says.
This book was really well written. It was told not only in words, but in music, and poetry. It goes through the struggle of getting that feeling of safe back to Tracy. The main characters are Tracy, Papa, Caroline, and Burgess Newman. It’s a gripping and haunting book and a must-read for teens 13 and up.

  17. Wringer, by Jerry Spinelli

    I Hate This Book!!!
Wringer, a person who twists the neck of a wounded pigeon after a bird shooting contest, was written for children of a young age. This novel is gruesome, twisted, gory, and I had a hard time reading it since the book never intrigued me. The only character I liked was Palmer, a boy from a small American town.
Palmer is a kid who understands why being a wringer is a horrible job. He believes this job is for people that hate animals or like gore, yet he likes animals and is grossed out by gore. He doesn’t want to be part of the wringer group, but he feels he has no choice.
The pigeon is an interesting character because he does funny acts and survived a slaughter fest by running away from one of the cages he was held in.
Palmer is a 10 year old boy who just had his birthday. The first part of the book was his initiation test to become a member of the group of wringers. Wringers are supposed to wring the neck of wounded pigeons. For Palmer’s initiation into this group, he was to be punched 10 times in the arm by the toughest member of the group. The punches hurt a lot. After this, everyone for a couple of weeks treated Palmer as a hero.
Eventually the guys told him he had been accepted into the group and he would be in the bird shooting contest and wring the necks of the pigeons. Then he gets a pet pigeon that had escaped from one of the cages. Now Palmer and his neighbor Dorothy are faced with a difficult choice - abandon the pigeon and go to the contest, or hide the pigeon and try and find a way out of this mess.
Many people who reviewed this book say this author has a twisted mind and he is glorifying violence. A different reviewer said that this book is the author’s way of teaching that people having a choice to be violent or not. I do not agree, because when kids first read the book, they don’t see through the lines until a teacher or an adult explains it to them, and sometimes they still don’t understand. In other words, the author’s message (lesson) is not obviously stated and not easy to recognize.
I decided to read this book because my teacher recommended it. I have not read any other books by this author and haven’t seen any movies so I can not compare this book to anything. I believe that this book is for people that see and agree with the moral of this story – violence isn’t always the only answer.

The book Emma-Jean Lazarus Fell Out of a Tree, by Lauren Tarshis, is a book that has a lot of dialogue in it and is mostly presented by a first person point of view. That first person is Emma-Jean Lazarus, one of the main characters. Emma-Jean is known as a weird person in her school. She doesn’t have any friends and she loves nature.
One day Emma-Jean was in the toilet and she saw Colleen Pomerantz crying in the bathroom. She was crying because her best friend Kaitlin was taking another girl Laura, on a ski trip rather than her. Colleen had a feeling that Laura was stealing Kaitlin away from her.
Emma-Jean tried to help Colleen by sending her a letter that said that Laura was invited to perform at the boys’ basketball awards. So that meant that Laura couldn’t go with Kaitlin on the ski trip, so Colleen was now able to go with Kaitlin.
The result of this led to a conflict. Laura found a file named “Colleen” in Emma-Jean’s room, and she saw a copy of that fake letter Emma-Jean had made.
The next day Laura threatened Colleen that she was going to show the file to their principal, Mr. Tucci. Unfortunately, there was a pipe that exploded right near Laura’s locker, and as a result, the file was ruined.
The title of the book seems a bit odd, but if you read the book you will understand it.
This is the first time a read a book like this. I haven’t read any other book by this author. It reminds me of a T.V. show I once watched called Unfabulous, which was about what happens to two best friends when a new person joins their group. I didn’t enjoy this book as much because I think there was too much dialogue and details and too little action. I would recommend this book to 6 & 7th grade girls.

Book Review: 47 is a novel about slavery written by an American author named Walter Mosley. The book has 232 pages. It is written in a narrative point of view by the name character 47. He is a slave in America. For most of his life he is called baby child and lived with Mama Flore, who was the closest thing he had to a parent, since his parents are unknown. Soon he has to become a work slave and gets branded with the number 47. Their boss, Master Turner, uses a system of numbers to identify the slaves. Soon 47 meats a runaway slave named Tall John. Tall John is very charismatic, and soon 47 and Tall John become best friends. Soon 47 finds out that Tall John is from beyond the earth. Tall John informs 47 that he is the chosen one, and he will lead the fight against Wall who is the leader of a race named the calash. They are trying to destroy the world. This book takes place in America in the 1700’s.
I really enjoyed this book. I liked the author’s writing style, and I liked how he described Tall John, I could really see him in my mind. I think the age group that would enjoy this book is over 13. My favorite parts were the battles. Overall I can’t really say anything bad about the book, it was great and I recommend it for anyone who enjoys a great story!

When I first picked up my book, Memoirs of a Teenage Amnesiac, I thought the read would be funny, and easy from its title. I also read another amazing book from the same author and I wanted to read something else from her work. When I started to read the book I noticed that this book was great for me and people who appreciate books with depth and greater meanings to things, it was a classic love story but there were twists, especially the fact that the very beginning of the book and half way through the senior year the main character, Naomi Portman, gets into an accident and only remembers 13 years of her life. This book is set in modern day times in the United States, and the main conflict is the internal conflict Naomi has with herself throughout the book. Who was I before I lost my memory? Was I happy? Who am I now? The book shows Naomi’s struggle to find herself, and to see everything from a different perspective. I think the best part of this book was when Naomi realized that the person that really knew who she was was the person she was meant to be with. I liked the way they showed this with a silence people share when they are just comfortable being quiet with each other. The author, Gabrielle Zevin, describes this as ‘a hum that you’ve always known’. I don’t think this book was as great as Gabrielle Zevin’s Elsewhere, but it was still an interesting read and I enjoyed it.

A baby girl is found one day by Silas Heap, and OrdinaryWizard, and taken home. On the same day, a women runs out of the house screaming "Dead" while holding a baby. Then 10 years later the girl, Jenna, is taken away by the ExtraOrdinaryWizard. She finds a boy of the young army named Boy 412. Soon a man named the Hunter is after them. They have to leave to the Marram Marshes. It turns out that a former ExtraOrdinaryWizard, DomDaniel (who wields Darke Magyk), is after Jenna. Will they survive against DomDaniel and the Hunter?

I would recommend this book to all people who think that wizards and magic are the coolest things ever. If you are a non-fiction fan, this is not the book for you. There are adventures, spells, charms and even pistols. Action lovers would also like these books. If you've read Harry Potter then you're gonna love this. Although if you have a very bad fear of goshts, evil creatures or bugs, DO NOT READ!

    Title: Hiroshima
    Author: John Hersey

    Summary

I picked a book called Hiroshima which is about the A-bomb (Atomic Bomb) which was dropped on the city of Hiroshima on August 6, 1945 during World War II. The six main characters are Mrs. Hatsuyo Nakamura, Dr. Terufumi Sasaki, Father Wilhelm Kleinsorge, Toshiko Sasaki, Dr. Masakazu Fujii, and Reverend Mr. Kiyoshi Tanimoto. This book tells the story of these six people and the people around them a day before, during, and 40 years after the A-bomb was dropped. The people that would enjoy this are the people that like war history and people that can deal with some of the details of the people. I picked this book because I wanted to know more about Hiroshima and the A-bomb and also because I like stuff about war. My favorite parts of the book was when it told what the people were doing at the time of the detonation, what they did after the A-bomb exploded, and what the six people did for the next 40 years.
